Here’s why we produced this song.
Most of us are familiar with the saying that death and taxes are the
only two certainties in life. I know for sure the former is true but evasion of
tax, I’m not so sure. Especially if one is rich enough to hire a good
accountant/lawyer/banker combination!
Time and tide wait for no one. When we are in our twenties, we feel
invincible, and we have the world at our feet. But as we age, our bodies start
to break down and some of us start to pass on. What a depressing way to begin a
blog post!
The way mortality statistics are presented masks reality. Mortality rate
is usually given as x number deaths (e.g. 9.27) per 1,000 population. In
reality, it’s ultimately going to be 1,000 deaths/ 1,000 population or 100%
mortality rate.
In our entertainment culture, we handle the topic of mortality with
amusement and kid-gloves. For example “Don’t Fear the Reaper”, a rock classic
by Blue Oyster Club (BOC): the catchy tune and cowbells drown out the gravity
of why we die and what happens after that.
The Bible tells us that there is an afterlife and the choices we make
whilst still alive have eternal consequences. The fear of the reaper then
becomes very real.
Perhaps BOC is right, we shouldn’t fear the reaper. But we should fear
God who after the reaper has done his work, will judge the living and the dead
(2 Timothy 4:1).
John (3:16, NIV) tells us:
For God so loved the world
that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life.
“Crossing the Rubicon” was written to talk about the passage of time,
something that we cannot stop. We cannot – in videogame/digital parlance –
respawn or reboot. We can only go forward in time and as we age, that journey
starts to shorten as we go along.
One of the verses in the song talks about what happens after we have
crossed over to the other side – will we be surrounded by the light of the One
who created light (Genesis 1:3) or darkness. There is a horrifying and anathematic darkness: Jesus talks about it in Matthew 22:13
and 25:30, as He teaches about those who choose to be excluded from God’s
kingdom.
Just like Caesar, who crossed the physical Rubicon, there’s no going
back once we conclude our journey on earth.
May you find the open arms of Jesus the Christ, there to welcome you
when you have crossed over to the other side.
If you want to know more about why God gave us His Son, Jesus the
Christ, and how you can have eternal life, you are invited to find our more here.
Cheers!
